Gene

From Beastiepedia: The Beastieball Wiki

Gene, full name Eugéne Gaspard, is a major NPC in Beastieball. He is a coach journeying around the region, playing with wild Beasties to hone his own skills.

Personality

Story

Gene appears in multiple different places throughout the story. You can encounter him in any order, in any of the following locations:

First Encounter

Gene tells the player about how he is traveling around, playing with wild Beasties as a way to become a better coach. He offers to play a match with you. After beating him, he gives you the King's Letter.

Second Encounter

Gene once again challenges the player to a match, using some wild Beasties. If the player has fulfilled some unknown conditions, one of your Beasties may ask to go train with Gene. If you allow him to borrow a Beastie, they will not be available for a while.

After defeating at least one ranked coach, Gene will appear after the game and return your Beastie to you.

Third encounter

Gene, once more, challenges the player with wild Beasties. If he had not previously trained one of the player’s Beastie, he will do so now. He says that he has learned a lot from this experience, but that it is time for him to return to his true team.

If this encounter is at Garcinia Meadows, he brings the player’s attention to the pathway to the Alto Alps.

SPOILER WARNING
This section contains endgame spoilers for Beastieball! Consider yourself warned.

Final Encounter

Once the player enters the Crown Series, it is revealed that Gene is the coach of The Midnight Machines, the #2 ranked team in the Beastieball League. He states that winning the Crown Series has been a long-time dream, and is determined to defeat both the player and Valerie Stride and become the champion. After the player's victory, he congratulates them on their win and expresses hope that they will meet again someday, leaving the player to enter the final match against Valerie.

Post-Crown Series

After the Crown Series, Gene can be found at the Base Camp in the Alto Alps. He will offer the player the Expedition Challenge. (check if this is what it’s actually called) He will also sell training items for SP that can be earned from Expeditions, similar to the Beastieball Academy.

Teams

Level scaling for teams is still under research.

This team represents the lowest possible levels it can be encountered at. Plays and Metamorphs are scaled based on the levels of each Beastie and their teammates, but level scaling is not yet fully understood. See below each team for notes on their scaling.

Overworld encounters

Gene's team composition, prior to the Crown Series, is random. His team always consists of wild Beasties from the area you face him in. Their levels scale similarly to other Coaches, but the moves and stats seem to follow normal progression for a wild Beastie. The Beasties also appear to be selected according their spawn rates.

Once Gene has been challenged in an area and you lose or forfeit, his Beasties will remain the same every time you challenge him, even if you defeat more ranked teams. The stats and levels will adjust as necessary, but there is no way to reroll the team itself without loading a save.

Crown Series

Gene also uses this team during the Super Tower Challenge.

Trivia

  • Gene speaks French. He slips French into a lot of his sentences, usually in expressions.
  • Gene's Beasties are named after French philosophers.
  • A guardian team in Alto Alps seems to also be French-themed and may be some of Gene's Beasties, although this is unclear:
