Guardian
Guardians are Beasties and Teams found throughout the world who are not accompanied by their coaches, but will still challenge any Ranked Coaches they come across.
Mechanics
Being a RANKED COACH means other coached Beasties will want to challenge you! If you want to pass through here, you'll have to win a match!
Guardians are Beasties owned by other coaches, as evidenced by their numbers and nicknames, but who are not currently travelling with their coaches. They will challenge nearby coaches to a Beastieball match. These matches are to two points.
Most Guardian teams contain exclusively numbered Beasties, but some (particularly around Amberstone) contain one or more numbered Beasties and fill the remaining slots with wild Beasties from the area. Numbered Beasties cannot be recruited to your team, but wild Beasties that are playing alongside those numbered Beasties can be.
There are two types of Guardian teams: stationary, and mobile. Both remain in the same screen, though. Mobile Guardian teams will charge towards the player when they get close, while stationary Guardian teams are typically blocking paths and will immediately start a match with anyone who steps into a circle marked out around them.
If a Guardian team's highest-level Beastie is higher-level than any Beasties the player currently has on their team, there will be a red effect on the screen when the player is close to them. Guardian teams are also marked on the map once the player has seen them, with overlevelled ones being marked in red instead of in black, and this allows the player to check what level a Guardian they have seen is.
By preventing the player from accessing certain areas before defeating Beasties of a certain level, Guardians serve as a form of level gating.
